Equipment Appraisal

Insight Forensic & Valuation Services provides independent appraisals of machinery, equipment, vehicles, furniture, fixtures, and other tangible personal property for financial reporting, tax, financing, transactions, and disputes.

A reliable equipment appraisal requires consideration of the purpose of the engagement, valuation date, applicable standard and premise of value, the assets being appraised, their age and condition, physical deterioration, functional and economic obsolescence, remaining useful life, and available market evidence.

Because the appropriate appraisal framework may differ depending on the purpose of the engagement and the type and use of the assets, we define the assignment in coordination with counsel, tax professionals, lenders, fiduciaries, business owners, and other advisors as appropriate.

Equipment Appraisals for Different Purposes

Financial Reporting
Appraisal of machinery and equipment for financial reporting purposes, including transaction-related reporting and other situations requiring an independent estimate of tangible asset value.
Financing and Collateral
Appraisal of equipment and other tangible personal property in connection with lending, refinancing, collateral evaluation, and other financing matters.
Tax Planning and Compliance
Appraisal of tangible assets for tax planning, reporting, transfers, and other tax-related purposes requiring support for the value of machinery and equipment.
Mergers, Acquisitions, and Other Transactions
Appraisal of machinery and equipment in connection with acquisitions, sales, recapitalizations, and other transactions. We may assist buyers, sellers, and their advisors in evaluating the tangible assets included in a contemplated transaction.
Marital Dissolution and Ownership Disputes
Appraisal of machinery, equipment, and other tangible personal property in matters involving marital dissolution, shareholder or partner disputes, buyouts, and contested transfers.
Commercial Litigation and Damages
Appraisal and related analysis in connection with contractual disputes, property damage claims, economic damages, contested transactions, and other commercial matters.

Valuation of a business or an ownership interest in one, rather than of its tangible assets, is business valuation.

Our Equipment Appraisal Process

  1. Define the Assignment

We identify the subject assets, valuation date, purpose, applicable standard and premise of value, intended use, and scope of the appraisal.

  2. Review the Available Documentation

We review relevant fixed-asset records, purchase invoices, depreciation schedules, equipment lists, maintenance records, prior appraisals, photographs, specifications, and other materials appropriate to the assignment.

  3. Inspect and Understand the Assets

When appropriate, we inspect the assets and document relevant characteristics such as manufacturer, model, serial number, age, capacity, configuration, use, location, condition, maintenance history, and observed modifications. Information provided by management or other sources is identified as such.

  4. Analyze Market Evidence

We research available market evidence, which may include dealer listings, auction results, reported sales, manufacturer information, industry publications, and other secondary-market data relevant to the subject assets.

  5. Evaluate Depreciation and Obsolescence

We consider physical deterioration, functional obsolescence, economic or external obsolescence, remaining useful life, and other asset-specific factors that may affect value.

  6. Apply Appropriate Appraisal Approaches

Depending on the nature of the property, the purpose of the appraisal, and the available evidence, we may consider the cost and market approaches and, where asset-specific economic benefits can be reasonably isolated, the income approach. Available indications are reconciled to the concluded value.

Reports That Explain the Opinion

Our reports identify the assignment, subject assets, information reviewed, inspection procedures, approaches considered and applied, significant assumptions and limiting conditions, and the basis for the concluded value.

An appraisal opinion reflects the information known or reasonably available as of the valuation date. It is not a guarantee of a future transaction price, which may be affected by asset condition, location, removal and transportation costs, timing, market conditions, negotiated terms, and events occurring after the valuation date.

Professional Standards

Our equipment appraisals are performed in accordance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), including the personal property appraisal and reporting standards applicable to machinery and equipment engagements. These standards establish requirements governing the development of the appraisal and the form and content of the resulting report.

How USPAP sits alongside the other standards a valuation professional may be subject to is set out in our overview of business valuation professional standards.
